Patriotic punter cheers test win

A patriotic punter who walked into a Manchester betting shop and placed £15,000 on England winning the second Ashes test has scooped £82,500.

The gambler was offered odds of 9/2 when he handed over his cash to a branch of the chain William Hill before the match began in Birmingham. England recorded a nail biting two run victory at Edgbaston on Sunday.

"How he felt on Sunday morning as the Aussies edged closer and closer I can't imagine," said a Hill's spokesman.

"After England got a bit of a thrashing in the first test match we thought we would struggle to take much money for them in subsequent games," said the spokesman.

He said the lucky punter asked for the odds on an England victory at a central Manchester bookies.

"He said 'I think I'll have £15,000 on them - by the way do you mind if I have £200 on this dog race first.'

"The man got back £1,000 on his greyhound bet so that should have been an omen."

Reduced odds

The spokesman added: "He then counted out £15,000 and I think it is fair to say it made him the most patriotic punter in the land, nobody else came remotely close to that."

However if he fancies a flutter on the third test the spokesman warned, "He certainly won't get 9/2 on England winning the next test they're 9/5 now."

If the man wanted to place his winnings on a victory at his local test ground Old Trafford for the third test he could scoop more than £200,000.

But William Hill still have England as outsiders to snatch the Ashes as Australia are 5/6 with the home team 15/8, BBC writing.
